The Snowbirds are honoured to be a part of this inspiring tradition of aerial excellence as proud ambassadors of the Canadian Forces and Canada, bringing their aweinspiring and captivating show to communities across North America.
The 85 member Squadron, which is based in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, symbolizes spirited national pride, extraordinary teamwork, and a steadfast commitment to a common
mission – to represent the best of the Canadian Forces and Canada.
Humbled by the recognition as a beloved national icon, the 24 member Snowbirds Show Team travels from coast to coast performing in air shows, participating in community events and, most importantly, telling the Canadian Forces story through their heartstopping aerobatic flying and engaging interaction with the public.
During the Snowbirds’ 38 year history, the team has performed their graceful show before more than 125 million spectators, representing the importance of dreams through its team member’s steadf ast perseverance, wholehearted dedication and disciplined approach to flight. Traveling across North America in 11 CT114 Tutor jets and a mobile support vehicle, the Snowbirds share their passion f or flight and pride in the Canadian Forces in their 35 minute show, which includes 9 jets flying in formations as close as 4 feet of wing overlap.
The Canadian Forces Snowbirds is comprised of experienced and highlymotiv ated team members f rom the Army, Navy and Air Force, both Regular and Reserve Forces. Through the
technicians’ dedicated and prof essional support, the Snowbirds are scheduled to perform in 65 air shows in 43 locations. With graceful rolls and loops, thrilling crosses with closing speeds of 1,000 km/hr, and magnificent burst f ormations, the Snowbirds demonstrate how ordinary Canadians can achieve the extraordinary through unparalleled teamwork.
The Snowbirds are honoured to fly Canada’s colours across North America and to represent the heroes of the Canadian Forces, who are making a difference at home and around the world.
HAWK ONE – THE RETURN OF A LEGEND
In 2007, a team of aviation enthusiasts largely from an Air Force background came together with the inspirational idea of offering to Canadians a tangible platform to help commemorate 100 years of Canadian aviation history.
The project involves the resurrection of a Canadair F-86 Sabre 5 jet fighter in the colours of the legendary RCAF Golden Hawks. It will be flown across the country in 2009 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada.
The F-86 was the RCAF’s principal fighter during the first decade of the Cold War. Hundreds of Canadian fighter pilots stood alert with the Sabre for almost a decade on 12 RCAF squadrons based in Europe with No. 1 Air Division. A total of 22 RCAF pilots also flew the F-86 in combat during the Korean War while on exchange duties with the USAF.
The Canadian Centennial of Flight heritage project is designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada, just as the Golden Hawks were created on March 1, 1959 to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Resplendent in their gold and red paint scheme, the Golden Hawks came to epitomize everything that was glorious about the RCAF. The team’s namesake, Hawk One, will now serve as the cornerstone for the Canadian Centennial of Flight events in 2009, appearing at approximately 20 airshows scheduled across Canada. The jet will also be featured in many flypasts with Canada’s famous nine-plane jet aerobatic team, the Snowbirds, as they traverse the country.
The resurrection of a Golden Hawk Sabre to celebrate this special anniversary represents an elegant salute to our nation’s rich aviation heritage. The direct lineage to the Golden Hawks offers a rare opportunity to link the past to the present with an aerobatic and ground display that is sure to thrill and motivate hundreds of thousands of Canadians from coast-to-coast.
The Hawk One project represents a partnership among Vintage Wings of Canada, the civilian sector through corporate sponsorship and the Department of National Defence through "in-kind" support. The venture has been established as a “non profit” organization comprised entirely of volunteers and is being funded by corporate sponsorship secured by the Hawk One team.
Michael Potter, founder of Vintage Wings of Canada, which operates and displays a collection of classic aircraft from their facility at the Gatineau Airport in Quebec, generously purchased and refurbished the Sabre which served 16 years in the RCAF prior to being demilitarized and registered as a civilian aircraft.
